You should probably get the book "Hiking Death Valley" by Michel Digonnet (ISBN: 0965917800). You should also visit the Park webpage on backcountry camping posted at the bottom.
Depending on where you want to hike (Death Valley National Park is a HUGE place), Feb. could be a great time to visit. Average temps in Feb. in the Furnace Creek area are highs around 22.7C with lows around 7.9C. But depending on the weather at the time of your visit, it could be much warmer or colder. The record high for Feb. is 32.8C. Also, elevation will have a strong influence that time of year. The park ranges from about -86m near Badwater to about 3367m on Telescope Peak. You also should paln on carrying all the water that you'll need (LOTS if it happens to be real warm).
The advantage to having a car, is the ability to visit the different sights which are spread over a very large area. Are you visiting to "see" Death Valley, or to experience hiking there?
Hope this helps,
