One has to define a crash. To a military pilot, any landing that you can walk away from is considered a good landing. The Harrier could have simply did a belly landing which leaves a long "skid mark" not a crater. If the seat and canopy was missing, that indicates that the pilot probably ejected.

When I worked on the Navy base in the early 60's it was not uncommon to fire a missile and have it land north of the base boundary. If it was not next to or on the highway, recovery was rarely attempted.
