I checked my topo software (see message from me also posted today) and it clearly identifies the airstrip as such. GPS coordinates are N 36 50' 04" W 117 54' 41". It shows a road leading from the north end of the strip NW to the Saline Valley road, but I saw nothing to indicate a road leading to the northeast as you describe. But the map does show the sand dunes about 5 miles NE of the strip, as you suggest. I've got to believe that the strip either had something to do with the buildings and mines in that area or maybe was constructed as an emergency strip from the 50's by the military? I recall the great story about Chuck Yaegar and Neil Armstrong having to make an emergency landing on a "dry" lakebed in the Mojave that turned out to be anything but dry.
