Just a note to those few of you who may frequent the Furnace Creek area, we found one of these same scorpions underneath our wheel chocks when we were breaking camp at Texas Springs last week. I've been visiting and hiking that area for well over 30 years, and this is the first time we've ever come across a scorpion in that area.
In the past few years, the NPS has diverted and controlled a small stream which is now flowing around the perimeter of the Texas Springs campground. A small "marsh" area of grasses has sprung up at the upper end of the camp ground. This may have contributed to the unexpected appearance of our scorpion friend.
As an aside, those of you with pets who may camp in Texas Springs should be advised that the quality of the water in the spring-fed stream around the campground is none too healthy from what I've heard. One of our friends dogs drank from one of the streams and spent the night throwing up -- no fun for anyone involved! Be sure to keep your pets away from the stream, and make sure your kids wash their hands frequently if they are playing around the stream (which is basically inevitable).
