any vehicle can go anywhere. get the vehicle that you would enjoy. a small pickup with a shell is nice to carry gear and bed for two. and will go anywhere. a suburban can go anywhere with a large group.
you must learn how to drive. that is #1. take a 4x4 driving class. ie. sprit de four a jeep club out of san jose used to teach classes 2x yr at hollister hills. other classes are taught throughout ca. [contact CA4WDC].
I have used 83 toyota, 89 suburban [no. fork trail cyn,lemoigne cyn 'cabin' & to the chock stone in Marble Cyn], 95 geo, 53 jeep, 83 vw rabbit diesel [Mahogney flat & Golier canyon]
again the main thing is to learn how to drive.
