When we drove in there about 1-1/2 years ago, I recall
quite a bit of sand for the first couple of miles out
of Stovepipe. Then the road (really just the floor of
the wash inside the canyon) was very rocky from the mouth
of the canyon up to the Marble Canyon turn. Of course,
road conditions change over time. Maybe someone here
has been in there recently. When we were there we did
not find any sign marking the Marble Canyon turn-off
(just a well traveled track). The rental company probably
has restrictions about being on that kind of road. Do it
at your own risk.
