We are very fortunate with Death Valley that there is terrain suitable for all levels of four wheel drivers. Even passenger cars can negotiate many backcountry roads. I have seen stock SUV's negotiate some of the worst roads in the park. There are quite a few places one can venture into the desert without having a hardcore challenge.
I have driven all of the park's most difficult trails. I have never needed to air down once, including at Echo, Goler, Big Four Mine, etc. I carry a portable compressor for emergencies, however.
There are many great trails in Death Valley and all over the region which provide great scenery, a challenge to beginners, and are not confined to the use of only modified rockcrawlers driven by pro mechanics.
Message to all four wheelers planning to embark on an excursion to Death Valley: buy Death Valley SUV trails by Roger Mitchell. It is very well written and gives accurate discriptions of each described trail. If anything, he makes the trail sound worse than it actually is. I have read some similar books about other areas where separate authors have made unrealistic reports on trails and their conditions. Mitchell is trustworthy so you can rely on his guide, but ultimately one must trust their judgement.
RiverRat, don't listen to Mr. Home. Explore Death Valley and have fun!!!
