hiked up Anvil Springs Canyon this evening and made it back alive. Highlights were a WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER (in tree hole), 8+ LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS, and a kamikaze COMMON POORWILL that did not appreciate my Northern Pygmy-Owl imitations. It dive-bombed me twice and came within an inch of my face! Needless to say, I hustled down the canyon, losing my cellphone along the way. So I'll be back up there tomorrow morning looking for it. Here is the complete list: California Quail Mourning Dove Common Nighthawk Common Poorwill White-headed Woodpecker Lewis's Woodpecker (plus 2 juveniles) Northern Flicker Western Wood-Pewee Steller's Jay Western Scrub-Jay Western Bluebird (5+) American Robin Pygmy Nuthatch White-breasted Nuthatch Brown Creeper MacGillivray's Warbler Pine Siskin Chipping Sparrow Spotted Towhee Lazuli Bunting Black-headed Grosbeak Brewer's Blackbird
