If you're planning on accessing DV from the west or south, Avis in Ridgecrest offers 4x4s on a reservation basis; generally the Chevrolet Blazer. Avis is located on China Lake Blvd., across from KMart.

If in Bishop, as previously mentioned, go through U-Save, located in the heart of town at Main St. (US395) and West Line Street. They generally have a Wrangler, a Suzuki Vitara and a Jeep Cherokee.

I've read the fine print and it's indeed vague. It appears that you can't use it for the reasons you rent a 4x4 for. I've rented from Avis several times in the past when I need extra people capacity. Once I got this black Blazer. It was bone stock suspension and tire-wise and it took a beating as I took four others besides myself to Lookout ghost town. Though I drove very conservatively it took a beating as it wasn't equipped to handle the deep washouts and large rocks going up the alluvium of Stone Canyon. It also got badly pinstriped, which in black the rig really showed it. I washed it before returning it to Avis, but numerous deep paint scratches still showed. I turned it in feeling guilty, but no questions asked.
