You did not say when in the fall you will be going......The flats are most likely the best free campground in the park- due to the elevation the flatlanders and tourists tend to stay away. If you can see snow from the pavement as you veer into the canyon , plan on a cold evening. The wind in the campground can be strong so plan on having a good tent. Bring hardwood firewood as collecting the old pine on the ground is a no-no.If you take a 2 wheel drive up there always carry snow chains. The last half mile to the camp is in the shade and snow sticks for weeks. Last may 14th I encountered 2 feet of snow on that last stretch and had to put the truck in 4 low. In the fall you should not have problems with a ranger (ford that is)and The Goody lady is correct on the time estimate. I like to hammer away from 5am until 730 then take a slow stroll as the sun is rising.Enjoy your hike!
