If your looking for a cheap place to stay I would suggest Beatty Nevada, at the Stagecoach Hotel or many of the other cheap hotels in the area. Beatty is right next door to the park, and requires a little more then an hour to get into/out of the park depending on where you are coming/going. I would also suggest that you take it easy your first trip, and try not to do it all in one shot, take your time. As for hiking at night, be very careful as all over DV there are many open mine shafts and other hidden dangers which lie around every corner. Number one danger is dehydration! Don't take it lightly or you could end up dead. To put it bluntly, if your piss (urine) is not clear, you are not drinking enough water, period! Also be on the look out for Rattlesnakes, they are out in full force, and will be cursing at night in July. Just this last weekend I had an encounter with a Rattlesnake that I was not suspecting nor prepared for, just keep and eye/hear out for them. Oh, and always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. And of course drink plenty of water, you don't want to become another statistic.
Drink Plenty of H20,
BTW- Not trying to scare you, just have fun and enjoy the sights...
