You may see the rare nocturnal desert rat. They are harmless creatures and very interesting. They look like something out of a horror movie so dont be alarmed or you may scare them off.
They usually drive old toyotas that are dirty but will go places that new fords cannot. If they speak to you offer them a cold drink and you will have a pal for life.....
seriously..... be careful in july in the desert. Do not wander far from pavement and have lots of water. If you do not want to spend the buckaroos for a hotel you may want to invest in a military style cot and sleep under the stars at the panamint springs campground. The showers are clean and there is plenty of shade and great company at the resort. The mayor of panamint will direct you on a location for a safe night hike. If you are new to this desert thing I strongly recommend that you do not hike at night without an experienced guide or at least always be able to see the lights at the resort. You can travel many nighttime miles and still see the lights at jerrys catcus at panamint. Furnace creek is very nice however, the early summer brings European tourists who spend lots of money so be prepared to pay a hefty sum. The resort must increase rates to pay for the air conditioning. Travel safe and enjoy the desert.
