I thought the mission of the NPS relating to the management of DVNP was to "conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpared for the enjoyment of future generations" (National Park Service Organic Act - 16USC1,2,3&4). Accordingly, it seems that the NPS is not charged with restoring new wilderness areas to pre-human habitat status, but rather preserving their current conditions to the best of their ability while providing for our continued enjoyment of these resources. In fact, that same Act specifically empowers the Secretary of the Interior to "provide in his descretion for the destruction of such animals and of such plant life as may be detrimental to the use of any of said parks, monuments, or reservations."
