Well,

My first reaction was 'yuck', too, to all that
asphalt being laid down in a pretty sensitive area
of the park .. but then again, I don't *know* what
the real visitation conditions are there .. I avoid
the touristy parts of the park. I mean - ignoring
some large number of ignorant tourists trodding about
might not be such a good plan, either.. So, what
do I know.

BUT I DO know that since I first discovered Death
Valley in 1991, it is really clear that the
National Park status has increased the visitation
to point of it starts feeling like Yosemite valley
in there, and it's not a good thing. I remember
I had, for instance, NO idea there was a 'Eureka
Valley' in 1991.. it wasn't on most maps.
Now it's on a park service map :( *everyone* going
to DV hears about it. Soooo they go there.

But I don't think it's 'fair' to point fingers at
the Sierra club (if that was being done) .. just
because they lobbied for DV to be DVNP, does not
necessarily mean they wanted or thought about, the
effects that actually came out of that designation.

ok, off soap box, now !
