Emmett C. Harder has some interesting information and discussion on one of the more recent cases involving several German tourists who dissappeared in the Death Valley wilderness a few years back. Also, had a recent and tragic death of an elderly man who died in the same vicinity as the missing German tourists when he tried to walk for help after he experienced car trouble. One Death Valley ranger also mentioned to me recently that there is a significant incidence of people actually travelling to Death Valley to commit suicide (though this seems to be a fairly common occurrence throughout the National Parks system).
