Hello Randy Banis, I am RiverRat. You said my post RE: Pollute the desert was unlinked, but it still appears to be there. What I saw, last Friday, was a very brief discussion on mine dangers (Joel Briggs), followed by some kind of personal attack (outlaw). Perhaps I was missing some of the exchange. In any event, fools rush in where angels fear to tread, and so here I am. If a thread starts on mine dangers I would still contribute something similar.

About protecting the desert by keeping places secret, two thoughts: (1) yes, keep it secret and protect it, keep out the great unwashed, I agree, but (2) how much would be lost if everything was kept so secret that no one went, and no one knew what was at stake?

During the fight to save the Tuolumne River, we took as many people as possible down the river so they could see what was threatened and how pathetic and innept (read: criminal) the proposed "mitigation measures" were. Yes, we have paid the price. The river isn't free and easy like it used to be--but it is protected from the damn dam builders. After seeing how close we came to losing the river, I can put up with the Forest Circus (groan).

Similar arguements, I imagine, could be made about the Desert Act. I know I grit my teeth when I go to Saline Valley now and see the NPS presence--but, if someone hadn't told me about Saline Valley once, I might never have gone that first time.

Having said that, outlaw, yes, there are places I keep secret, except with my family.
