Hello--let me get this straight--Mr. Briggs warns of the very real dangers of exploring mines, especially vertical ones, and you say he is polluting the desert? What is the connection? Every year people die exploring old mines. I agree, sometimes it improves the gene pool by removing the stupid ones, but usually it results in roads being closed, mine (and natural cave) openings being blasted shut, less access on public and private land, more restrictions, and so on.

Bad air? usually kills the adventurer and the person who tries to pull him out (e.g., Tuolumne County, California, under Table Mountain). Falling rock? a hard way to go if you don't die right away (examples should be obvious). Fall down a vertical shaft? missing forever (e.g., Terlingua, Texas) or a very dangerous and expensive body recovery. And, except for the stupid ones, a life unlived, the future gone, for dead is forever.

I have never met Mr. Biggs, but his words sound of the truth and ring with authority. However, one must beware, sir, that in speaking of babble the pot isn't calling the kettle black.
