It is very easy to calculate you position on a map, once you get the hang of which number of the "prefix" to ignore. Also, you can get handy scales which will also help calc location (these are also available for DMS)
I have "The Coordinator" and a set of scales that are spec'd for various scales of topo maps.
All in all, UTM is really easy to eyeball things
