Here is a link to the NPS rules/regulations page on their website. Sounds pretty straight forward if you don't have to read between the lines. An unloaded, cased gun in a backpack is being transported. They don't specity the mode of transportation.
I personally don't carry a weapon, but the thought has entered my mind.
