I would suggest that one errors on the side of caution when traveling the back country. But not to the extent that one does not enjoy the beauty and expanses.
As for your comment regarding the Panamints, glad your experience has been enjoyable. Obviously there has been sporadic criminal activity in the Range for years. The last murder that I am aware of occurred a few years ago about one mile above Clair Camp in Pleasant Canyon. The camp of the miner who was killed was burned in an attempt to hide the crime.
So, because of remoteness, there is always the potential. How serious the potential is anyone's guess. I know it is not always possible, but I always recommend that one travels with others. Just part of the enjoyment.
