Ditto what Joel said. I use my GPS for those reasons in addition to geocaching. I have the basic yellow eTrex - about $117 at Walmart, although I did hear rumours of Target pricing it at under 100 bucks.
I am NOT handy with a compass so the GPS is great for me locating places I find on maps. And I always have lots of batteries!
