A GPS is great for pre plotting routes and areas of interest. Lets say you find a mine on a map.. you can enter the coordinates and it will tell you how far and what direction to go. This is great when in very rugged terrain such as the Panamints. Also, when you find a place of interest you can WAYPOINT it and check it out later on maps. Steve is right though, GPS should always be consider secondary and never as a primary. Your batteries go dead... you may be in trouble.
