You there and there are 2 or more roads really there. You get a fix, mark it on the map and within a minute you know which road it is. I used to do this without a GPS and I still first look for land marks, but sometimes in the desert landmarks are hard to find. YOU are 110% right "I've never been unable to read a map because its batteries were dead" and GPS should be used as a back-up tool or a short-cut, not inplace of paper maps Also my wife lacks nav. skills, I hoping for her to one day learn how to use the GPS. Then if we are hiking away from our rig, she can return to it using the pointer arrow. I got her reading maps, and north she can find with a compass, but I don't always hike straight south. :-) Just a tool if everything else goes bad.
