Hmm... Several of us just recently learned that a explorer visited the place in in 1840, bring with him a pocketful of gophers and a mule that can breeze out of his ears. The story goes something like this:
When he first entered the valley, it was covered with dead animals and people killed by a deadly gas that blanket the valley floor. I might add, a mile up were thousands of vultures, circling. Using his gophers, he was able to tell the depth of the gas and how high he had to keep his head out as with his mules ears. After killing off a dozen or so gophers, he discovered that the gas was explosive.

So with that, he climbed ot the top of Telescope Peak, made some sort of bow and arrow, iginated it and shot it to the valley floor... the explosion was so powerful and hot, that is burned everything on the valley floor - leaving nothing, and the flames shot up a mile for it also burned the vultures to ashes... thus, Death Valley.

I believe this story for I have seen vultures and may cat does catch gophers.
