Wheat's Centennial Edition of Manly's book. Jean and I do not agree with his route. The details of the question as to where Providence Spring is are detailed in a paper we presented at the Fourth Death Valley Conference on History and Prehistory, Feb. 1995 titled: "Where is Providence Spring?" George Koenig and Carl I. Wheat propose similar routes but they can not be defended by the facts of the case (Wheat was an attorney). We are convinced some of the Jayhawkers, who entered Searles Valley from the north (not over Manly Pass) went to Great Falls Basin. However, that is not where Providence Spring is. It is in Indian Joe Canyon (not the spring, but the canyon) near the mouth of the canyon. Water from the spring surfaces there and that is where Deacon Richards found the water. LeRoy
