Nope! It is not stupid to visit Death Valley without a vehicle. I have hitchhiked from the top to the bottom in the hot season. Bummed around the campgrounds for a ride...shared a few beers (my treat). It takes a bit of planning. I suggest that you stay on the main roads. Pay your entry fee, be respectful, and thank the folks that help you.
