Is the "old Gieger Grade" the dirt road that paralells U.S. 395 and crosses CA 182 entering by the campground way opposite the "old toll road". And not having acesss to a 4x4 last year while on a spur of the moment trip to Tahoe (rental sedan) and coming across this great "town" I had no choice but to be a so-called road maggot. otherwise I would have entered on this road you speak of, I also would have tried the "Rubicon" unfortunately that will have to wait until this fall.
