Feral jacks and stallions engage in dung stacking as a means of defining territory. A few domestic stallions also do this. Successive dung piles are honored by newer visitors with their own calling cards. Most domestic horses in large fields and pastures will leave dung in only a few areas as opposed to random scattering. Rarely do they bother to stack droppings.
