For the Manly Pass trail, BLM route P168, use the graded access road for the Sand & Gravel Company, just a few miles north of town. Just before reaching the gravel company yard, a marked, good dirt route clearly veers northeast to the saddle in the Slate Range.

At about a mile or so inside the canyon there is a major fork -- turn left. Although straight is well travelled, it is a dead end. I think it is well travelled only because so many make this mistake.

The route is easy all the way to the top, and even down the other side into Fish Canyon. From here the route is more difficult and I'd recommend a high-clearance 4x4 with offroad tires from Fish Canyon down to Panamint Valley floor.

Route P168 deadends into P170 at the western shore of south Panamint Lake. Head north for an easy but scenic 45 minute trip to Ballerat, or south for an easy 15 minute trip to the mouth of Goler Wash.

I was there on Sunday 3/30 and the route was in excellent shape.
