Keith, I think you'd be OK driving up from the east side on Warm Springs road but you might regret trying to drive past Mengels Pass were his grave is with a Suburban (High clearance recomended or old vehicle you don't mind trashing a little). The view from the pass looking back toward Striped Butte is fantastic (check out picture on the "explore" section of this web site! Camping is OK two mile after you leave the main road. The elevation is around 4000 ft and gets cold so be prepared. A must to start out with (since you haven't done any 4x4 in the valley) would be to do Titus Canyon first stopping at Ryolite to see the bottle house. Have fun.....12 String
