As is the case with all off road trips, you take all of the risks. That includes the Southpark Canyon bridge.

The BLM/NPS has placed a safe working load limit of 3 tons (6,000 lbs). Certainly, heavier vehicles have made there way over the bridge in the past 10 years. However, your vehicle's weight, under or over that limit could be in the wrong place at the wrong time while crossing.

Most people get out of their vehicles and inspect the bridge prior to crossing. I suggest you do the same. Remember, if you are unsure, there is no place to turn around. You will have to back up a very difficult section of the road.

The FOB group inspects the bridge once each year. We have never found there to be any problems. Additionally, we use the bridge on a regular basis without incident. However, we always check things out each time.

In most cases, the bridge is usually considered the safest section of the road. You must be the judge.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
