This is going to sound pretty counter-intuitive, but if you've got more than one day, try it from the opposite perspective, shooting back at the east side of the valley as the hill and mountains light up in the golden evening light. Even from Furnace Creek, the view can be pretty spectacular. Might try getting out onto the Badwater flats, or from Westside Road.
Back when I was coaching photojournalists (blind leading the halt) one of the best tidbits I ever offered was to turn your back on the obvious action once in a while to capture the shot everyone else misses.
