The best small map is aaa. If you have 14 dollars to spare for a more detailed and fantastic map get the Delorme California Atlas and Gazetter. It requires turning a few pages but it has even the springs and mines. you can get it at big 5 sporting goods-borders-sportmart etc....... West side hwy gets closed based on manpower that is available for patrol(rangers) People Die on west side hwy when it is 120 around the clock and there is no patrol to check on the welfare of stupid city slickers who do not prepare for the elements involved in desert travel. Last week west side hwy was looking great and wide open. enjoy!
