The Jayhawkers camped at Jayhawker Well, just to the east of McLean Spring, because they found fresh water there. The well, a small hole, has fresh—but barely so—water. The Indians had dug the well.

Clear Indian trails came to the well and that is how the Jayhawkers found it. The temperature around the well would probably be colder than areas up-slope because of cold air drainage.

The lost emigrants had figured out that Indian trails went from water to water (sooner or later). LeRoy
