Keep in mind that either may be the case on that road. However, I will say that after exploring almost every backroad and 4wd trail in DV and surrounding environs and comparing conditions to those posted it has been our group's experience that if there is a 6 inch pothole or small obstacle in the road the DVNP posts a closure in the form of signs or on their road reports. They must do this from the perspective of the lowest common denominator (passenger cars and other 2WD vehicles) and hopefully prevent a dangerous situation for drivers of those vehicles. You need to keep this in mind if you do not have 4WD. Additionally, you are on your own if you get stuck as most tow services will not proceed beyond the posted location. Regarding that particular pass, we have experienced both needing 4WD and also not needing 4WD when the signs are posted. The weather does take its toll on that road from time to time. Travel with 2 or more vehicles if you can when going to these types of locations.
