Hiking - How To Prepare

I will be visiting Death Valley in March. Coming from New York. My hiking experience is primarily colder weather, mornings low 30's to high's of about 60.

What can I do now, even though it is still cold here to help prepare for the change in temperature? I have done some high elevation hiking out west with no problems.
