Your fears are misguided, the final EIS/EIR, chapter 4, Revised/Clarified Impacts and Mitigation Measures clearly states that the "highwall" of the mine pit will be "stained" in colors appropriate to the Panamint Mountains. The EIS/EIR even offers the possibility of large boulders being attached to the new side of the mountain slope to reduced the "skinned" appearance of the mountain, giving a more "natural" look.
There is even a suggestion that mine might be smaller than planned, but, oddly, no mention of the mine eventually marching almost to the mouth of Happy Canyon, a distance of near nine miles. But then, Happy Canyon is now Wilderness and all is well.
