I just finished reading "In the Heart of the Sea" by Philbrick. As a survival story, it rates with the Bennett-Manly Party. All good survival stories are based in fundemental miscalculations. For example, the Bennett-Manly Party failing to heed Captain Jefferson Hunt's advice. In the Essex disaster, Pollard and Chase decided to sail southeast, rather than an easy cruise to the Marquesa Islands.
