Joyce, With regard to trail conditions. There is three ways to get to the mine site and we have done all three. The upper trails are very tough and I mean tough. If you are not in shape or in good health – do not attempt these trails. Both have 45 degree inclines and some over ¼ mile long. This may not sound like much, but trust me, ¼ with a 45 degree incline with loose rock, it is not a good combination. Also, I heard a few weeks back that an older couple ventured down there around 2PM. They did not get back to the hotel until 11PM. Asked why, they informed the park ranger it took them four hours to get out of there, in the dark with near freezing temperatures. Each step they had to rest. The lower trail is much easier (but still very difficult and long). Scale 1-10, this is a 7 with the uppers being a +8/9. Investigate and keep looking around. You will find more information about this place. But again, use good judgment and leave everything as you found it. Good Luck,
