I personally have not visited Cerro Gordo since mid-June '01. I've heard from a couple of other recent visitors, though.
The Cerro Gordo Road, up from Owens Valley, is in normal condition: graded, high clearance recommended, 4x4 helpful.
As the road continues down the eastern side expect more ruts and a more narrow path, but this road is in its normal good condition all the way to Lee Flat and the Saline Valley Road.
Expect it to be cold and icy in Cerro Gordo, maybe even some snow. This is one route that could quickly change conditions -- a fast-coming snowstorm can bury you quick at 8000 feet.
