You're probably talking about the desert salt fish. They are located in two or three different areas in the park, but one in particular was a deep shaft filled with water rather than an open body of water or stream. I believe that access to it is now tightly controlled. I saw it maybe 25 years ago when it was still open. It was somewhere on the east side of the Valley, as I recall.
