Maps such as these are fairly handy, but tend to have the lesser known routes missing. I.e. the free download lacks South Park road. I realize this is a free download, and may be stripped of some info (like the contours).

For $150, www.maptech.com offers high resolution digital version the USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangles on CD. I "appropriated" one-third of the set for SoCal (5 cd's). The detail of the 7.5 minute quads doesn't get much better, and the maps come with modest gps and mapping software, too.

I have been using it to compare favorite campsites with amateur radio repeater locations to determine if I have line-of-sight conditions.

It's been working well so far. If I had a laptop it would be awesome with my gps.

Also, you can purchase portions of the State, or Parks for less than the full $150.
