Thanks to everyone for the suggestions on where to go, what to do for a first visit to Death Valley. Following your advice, we spent the first night at the Armagosa Hotel ($42 for a King!). I would also recommend Rose's Cafe for an evening meal, about 10 miles north. There was only one other guest, which gave the hotel a wonderfully quiet, eerie feeling. As was suggested, the highlight of the trip was the RaceTrack (as well as the hundreds of Joshua trees we passed in order to get there). We only had 3 days (due to an unanticipated, but thoroughly enjoyable, extended stay in Vegas), so I will definitely be back.
