As per my conversation with the local Park Ranger in June of this year, the Park Service intends to keep the road open regardless of its condition. I spoke to him as I was making my way up to Steele Pass from SV in my trusty Daihatsu Rocky, and he was making his way down in the comfort of his Hummer. I hope he's correct.
