Hunter Mountain Road

I drove the Hunter Mt. road west-east, into Hidden Valley a couple of years ago in late September, and it was glorious. Planning the same entry this late Sept., this time to base camp around Goldbelt and access Marble Canyon from the west for a few days' backpacking. I've never taken Hunter Mt. road east-west, and I've heard that the winter storms really chewed it up. I'll be in my trusty Trundle Bus, a 4WD Explorer, but with three large men and a serious load of gear, she'll be riding heavy.
Anyone been up Hunter Mt. Rd. from the east recently? And/or, anyone done Marble Canyon via Goldbelt? Diggonet's book makes it look pretty easy--only problem is the massive amounts of water we'll have to carry for a five-day backpack.
