I went up it a few weeks ago. The track across the valley (from the Saline Valley Road) is actually much more treacherous than the grade up to Racetrack. There have been a lot of flash floods in Saline that have seriously eroded the roads across the valley floor.
Until the road is repaired, you may find that you can safely negotiate the descent and then not be able to cross the valley floor.
