I actually bought said issue 2 days ago. The Dunes sure look like Olancha, remember they started out toward Cerro Gordo.
The "dry lake" actually looks like a former muddy spot in an area of low water, like those adjacent to roads, not a playa situation--though they do so teakettle junction sign that is near the Racetrack.
I think you are blowing this way out of proportion wihtout even bothering to read the article. I advise you to do so.
However, regarding their opinions of the 4wd's, I rarely take anything that Road and Track or Motortrend says seriously about a 4wd vehicle or a trip.
