I'm suprised, too. I'll look for the article out of interest. If so, this wouldn't be the first time a vehicle mag featured pics of inappropriate vehiclular use. Most of the big name mags, though, have smartened up lately.
My guess, though, is that they were using the words "Death Valley" to add excitement to their article, when the actual off-road test were conducted on near-by BLM lands. Again, just my guess.
There is a chance that the dunes they were driving on were either Olancha or Dumont Dunes.
As for a legal-to-drive-across lake bed near the Park, maybe the Rose Valley, behind Fossil Falls along Hwy 395? That'd make sense if combined with Olancha Dunes -- both within 40 miles of each other.
Or maybe Silver Lake, which would work in combo with Dumont Dunes, again close together?
