I just returned from an all-too-brief two-day
soak in the Saline Valley (Feb 2-3). We entered
through Steele Pass, via the Eureka Dunes and
Dedeckera Canyon, Saturday. There was an inch
max of snow, and the route was always clearly
delineated by previous tire tracks. Dedeckera
Canyon requires good ground clearance, but the
rock ledges seemed much less severe than I
remembered them. The trail to the upper warm
springs, and on from there, was in incredibly
good shape, especially given last summer's
floods (and at least subjectively better than
October 2001, my last drive through).

We left through South Pass Sunday. Standard
washboard and a few potholes on the Saline Valley
Road. Maybe two inches of snow in some of
Grapevine Canyon's shady spots. Definitely
doable in two-wheel drive.

My companions were driving two Jeep Grand
Cherokees (one completely stock), and I was in a
Land Rover Defender 90.

Happy soaking,
Trevor
