The terrain the road travels through varies greatly and so does the road. The first few miles are flat and straight and often washboarded. If it has been recently bladed, the surface can be fairly loose sand, dirt and gravel. The middle part is usually hard packed dirt and is usually fairly good, but rains can cause ruts. Once you drop down into the Titus Canyon narrows, it is usually a lot of gravel more than sand. The exit road from the mouth down to Scotty's Castle road is usually rough and washboarded.
